Windows on the Past: Kennebunk's National Register Historic District
Opening Summer 2010 - ongoing

In 1963, Kennebunk became the first town in Maine to establish a historic district.  In 1974, the district received its designation as a National Register Historic District. A stunning tableau of Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles are featured, making this section of Kennebunk a real-life digest of the hallmarks of American architecture.

In this landmarks exhibition, dozens of vivid, contemporary images captured by local photographer Kevin Byron are paired with vintage photographs and artifacts from the Museum's collections to provide visitors with the full historical and architectural context of these signature structures, as well as the people who built and lived in them. Visitors can familiarize themselves with the architectural elements and styles that distinguish the district and can even construct scale models of some of the homes.

Learning is an Ornament: The History of Kennebunk's Schools
Opening late September 2010 - ongoing

Based upon the eponymous 2009 book by the Museum's archivist Rosalind Magnuson, this exhibition will explore the development of Kennebunk's schools from one-room facilities to the robust district they comprise today. Highlights of the exhibition will include numerous photographs and a replica circa 1920s classroom.
