When one of our sons was asked to write about someone who makes a difference, he chose my Great Aunt Margaret. While she devoted herself to helping others through her dedication to her church in Manhattan and to other charities, she also had an invaluable impact on our family; especially for me. As wife and then all too soon as widow of my mother’s brother Charles, she was in important respects a true mother to me, a listener, a deeply religious person who became my moral compass. She honored our family by choosing to leave her beloved New York to be close to us in Kennebunk when she needed more of our caregiving. We shared such sweet years until her death at 96, fittingly on All Soul’s Eve. In our best moments her influence still plays its part.
