Helen Thompson
Helen was born in Belmont Massachusetts in 1924 and grew up in Belmont and Cambridge. She always told people, “I was delivered by my grandmother!”, when the doctor failed to arrive in time. Helen was the middle child between two sets of brothers. Her two oldest brothers were stationed in the South Pacific during World War II but returned safely. She survived all of her siblings to her surprise. All four brothers had successful careers and are survived by Helen’s many nieces and nephews of whom she was very fond.
After many years in the Boston area working as an executive secretary in several corporate settings and ultimately as Assistant to the Dean at Andover Newton Theological School, she retired to Maine. Her Maine chapter was full of family and friends. She watched her two grandchildren Nicholas and Mattias grow up as well as her grand nieces, Meg and Hannah.
She spent time with her niece Nancy and partner Jennifer who were nearby in South Portland and entertained visiting relatives and friends from Massachusetts during the summer months. Mom enjoyed the new friends she made at the Graves Library Book Group in Kennebunkport, The Senior Center and her wonderful swimming group that met weekly for
many years. Seven
of her last years were spent as one of the first tenants of the Park Street School after it was renovated by Avesta into senior housing and she enjoyed many gatherings and fellowship with the other tenants for those years.
Helen died in 2021 at the age of 96 at my home in Biddeford and is deeply missed and remembered for her kindness, friendship and positive approach to life.
