Victory Garden Vlog – July 2020
It’s Cynthia here! We’re visiting the Victory Garden to check on its progress on July 2, 2020.
Most vegetables are growing incredibly quickly and the time for our first harvest is almost upon us! Lettuce, radishes, and broccoli is almost ready.
I wanted to take a moment to talk about watering. If you are a new gardener, this is one of the trickiest things to get right (beyond everything else!). I always say that it takes me about 90 minutes to water the gardens properly. Why do I know this?
Especially during the summer heat, water coming out of a hose or sprinkler barely makes it below the surface of the soil. So even if you see water pooling around the bases of plants, it probably still won’t be enough water. The best way to test this is to water what you can, and then test the depth of damp soil by sticking your finger into a corner of your garden bed. If you can feel dry soil beneath the surface…that means more watering!
You’ll hear me mention volunteering in this video many times. If you’re interested in joining us (indoors or outdoors!), click here to check out our Volunteer information.
